Gambling promotions: understanding the claims

A headline bonus amount is a marketing claim. It does not establish that a service is authorised in Australia, that a payment will be returned or that gambling is risk-free.

Read the claim in context

Promotional language can focus attention on a potential reward while giving much less space to restrictions. Before relying on an advertisement, identify which operator it concerns, when the information was published and whether the full terms support the headline.

Questions promotional copy should answer

  • Does the wording distinguish promotional credit from withdrawable money?
  • Are time limits, eligibility exclusions and other restrictions clearly disclosed?
  • Does the page identify its commercial relationship with the operator?
  • Can statements about authorisation be checked against the relevant official record?
  • Does the advertising imply that gambling solves financial problems or guarantees success?

These questions help assess the quality of information. They are not a method for selecting or taking advantage of a gambling offer.

Australian advertising rules

ACMA explains that advertising prohibited interactive gambling services is banned. Its guidance also addresses misleading or socially irresponsible advertising, including claims linking gambling with success. Read ACMA’s advertising guidance.
